be dealt with on the spot and will vary with every structure.
We assume that by the present submission to us
of the various documents connected with the bridges, the
matter has now been definitely referred to us and our advise
asked under paragraph (a) of our letter of January 25th 1906.
We are not, however, prepared to give any definite opinion
in respect of the important subsidences which have been record-
ed as to what would be the best method to be now pursued, with
out considerably more information than is at present at our
disposal, comprising detailed drawings of all the bridges,
precise descriptions of the cracks and diagrams of the various
positions at which levels and borings have been taken. In
fact we think that a personal visit to the bridges and the
collection of information on the spot is indispensable before
we can express any useful opinions.
It was in this connection and in order to save the
Government the considerable cost of a special visit by one
of our firm, that we have suggested that as Mr. A.J. Barry is
visiting China on other business, he should inspect the lins
including the bridges on our behalf. We have the utmost
confidence in his knowledge and judgement and we will carefully
discuss with him all the information at present available
In due course we will, as re-
before he leaves England.
